John Wesley visited Ramsgate once, in December 1766.
Wesleyan Methodists
The Wesleyans opened their Bethel chapel and Sunday school on Hardres Street in 1810. A new Sunday school was built in 1885 and the chapel was renovated in 1886; a new hall was added to celebrate the centenary in 1911. Following wartime bomb damage a new chapel was built in 1955 and these premises became the home of the Hardres United Church (a Methodist and United Reformed Church LEP) in 1979. The United Church was joined in 1988 by the congregation of the Northwood church, opened as a Wesleyan mission in 1931.
Primitive Methodists
The first PM chapel in Ramsgate was the former Beulah Baptist chapel, purchased in January 1841. This building closed in 1868, when the congregation joined the newly-built Queen Street chapel (constructed in 1868-69, and then rebuilt in 1873-74, following a major fire). A Mission Hall was established in Denmark Road in 1869, but this was destroyed by enemy action in December 1940.
